Good causes do not have enterprise budgets.

Organisations tackling climate change, poverty, health inequality and social justice are often under-resourced, sporadically supported and operating in isolation. They may be passionate experts in their fields, but they face persistent constraints.

Too often, building a better world means confronting stubborn real-world obstacles – above all, a shortage of capital.

Yet those are exactly the kinds of challenges that spark our curiosity here at Braidr. Especially the complex, never-been-done-before kind that could make a real difference to many lives.

AI for Good is an initiative that directly expresses our belief that data and expertise should drive positive change. It is also our way of helping to address the shortage of resources and expertise faced by the causes and campaigns we believe in, and which increasingly need all the help they can get.

To put that conviction into action, we’re committing one week per quarter of our data science capacity to support under-resourced organisations tackling significant challenges. 

Problems that matter. Problems that are genuinely hard.

AI for Good creates a mutual exchange of value. It supports partners tackling environmental, social and ethical challenges while giving Braidr the opportunity to apply our expertise where it can make a real difference.

The problems faced by most causes or campaigns combine constraint and complexity – limited data, finite resources and multiple stakeholders pulling in different directions. That is precisely where rigorous data science proves its worth. And that’s why we’re so keen to bring our expertise and passion for problem-solving to the table.

Braidr benefits because we believe AI should serve people, planet and profit – in that order, and without sacrificing any one of these objectives for the others. This is how we put that belief into practice, while also supporting the purpose and ambitions of our clients.

There is also shared value in collaboration and in telling these stories well. Together with our partners, we’ll share the outcomes as widely as possible, raising awareness of the causes and of the organisations working to address them.

We’re also clear about what we won’t do. 

  • We won’t pretend AI solves what money, coordination and political will cannot.
  • We won’t deploy it where the energy cost exceeds the benefit.
  • We won’t claim credit for solving systemic challenges – but instead contribute rigour to the people already on the ground doing that work.
  • We believe the benefits of AI outweigh the risks, but we won’t underestimate its power or the need for vigilance in how it is used.
  • And most importantly, we won’t use data gathered through pro bono work for commercial advantage.

What we will do is bring everything we know about pattern recognition, systems thinking and evidence-based decision-making to bear on problems that deserve better solutions than they have today.

This is not charity. It’s expertise, applied with intention. And it’s a commitment we take seriously. While we’re proud of what has been achieved so far, the challenges remain – and so does the work required to meet them.
